If you still think you’re doing yourself a favor by switching from regular soft drinks to diet, then think again. We’ve mentioned this in blogs in the past - that soft drinks can actually increase your risk of being overweight. But now another report is being published on the risks of soft drinks on heart disease and other metabolic problems (Read: Medical News Today). The statistics show clearly that soft drinks of any kind should just be avoided all together.
But I have a real problem with the comments made by this physician: "Moderation in anything is the key," said Ravi Dhingra, M.D., lead author of the study and an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School. "If you are drinking one or more soft drinks a day, you may be increasing your risk of developing metabolic risk factors for heart disease." Spoken like someone who knows nothing about human behavior - moderation just doesn’t work, 99% of the time! Survey some alcoholics or drug addicts and ask them. Food have their own inherent dangers for addiction. Why? Because we need to eat to live. And food and drink makers know how to make products that taste great (are addictive?). But when it comes to liquids, we don’t need to drink anything but water to sustain life…and a healthy life!
You don’t want to subject yourself to moderation with those foods or drinks that are not contributing to your health. Foods are meant to keep us healthy, first and foremost; and a distant second, to be enjoyed. The problem starts when we try to enjoy a food or beverage that has little or no health benefits at all and think we can do it in moderation. Why? All for the sake of enjoyment? If that’s the case, the enjoyment is the motivation and the makers of that product will be sure that your enjoyment is great enough for you to want more…and more…and more!!
So stick with water as your #1 beverage of choice and don’t try moderation for any consumable that isn’t providing a benefit to your good health!
