There is a mistaken belief going around, which isn’t based in any sort of scientific study, that if you work out the muscles around unwanted fat, the fat will disappear. The reality is that working out muscles in a specific area does nothing more in that area than build those muscles. Building muscles in an area can make it look leaner, but it won’t get rid of the fat. The reality is that you have to burn fat off in whatever order your genetic disposition burns off fat. Since I’ve lost about 40 pounds on Medifast, people often ask me questions about the ins and outs of Medifast. From these conversations, I’ve learned that most people assume that Medifast is mostly based on shakes and bars.

Although it’s very true that the shakes and bars are a very convenient part of the diet, they are only one component. In reality, Medifast has over 50 products from which you can chose. They even have plans for diabetics, men, heart, and arthritis patients.

I am on the five and one Medifast plan which means that I eat five small Medifast meals per day which one lean and green meal (lean meat or protein with vegetables) that I chose to have for dinner. In this diet, there are a few stand out products which I feel have made this plan easy to stick with and have contributed to my success. They are:

1. The Medifast Drink Products: And no, I don’t mean the shakes, although the shakes really are quite good. I love the cappuccino, latte and cocoa. I used to be addicted to Starbucks lattes and knew that I would have withdrawal and would miss my latte fix. Now, I put my Medifast hot drink in a Starbucks to-go cup and I’m on my way. I also really do like the cold fruit drinks and the tea.

2. The Medifast Dessert Products: Medifast makes a mean pudding. And, if you’re really creative, the protein bars can kind of remind you of a Three Muskateer Bar. Knowing that I have dessert foods to look forward to without guilt has helped a lot.

3. The Medifast Breakfast Foods: I love carbs and breakfast has always been my favorite meal. Many diet plans make you switch breakfast to egg whites or other proteins. Medifast offers a nice oatmeal option that is really good. They also have scrambled eggs and I have gotten used to those, but I like the fact that I can have oatmeal (one of my favorite carbs) as an option.

4. The Medifast Snack Foods: Eating crackers or snack foods is a no no on many diets, but Medifast lets you have crackers and soy chips. I was afraid of the soy at first but it really just take like a regular, lighter version of a cracker. Again, knowing that a friendly version of a cheat food is available means that I don’t feel as deprived.

5. The Medifast HealthMate Blender: This very efficient blender makes all of the products I love taste better. When you add a little ice in this blender the shakes are rich and thick and taste like a milk shake. The pudding is very creamy and the latte and cappuccino taste like it came out of a coffee shop. There are cheaper shakers available, but this blender is pretty reasonably priced and it makes the food tastes so much better and is very convenient and easy to clean.

Although Medifast offers a huge variety of products, these are my favorites and the ones I feel have made my weight loss journey the most successful.

I wonder what fitness equipment you have around your house at the moment. Maybe an old set of dumbbells, a skipping rope, some ankle weights, a mat, a bench or a fitball? And if you have this kit, is it ready for action? Has it been used recently?

It is an integral part of turning over a new leaf in your fitness regime. You plan what you want to achieve and then go out and buy the kit that will help you reach your goals. If you cannot, chances are, you never will. You need to have somewhere handy you can store your kit. If possible it is good to get it out of sight so that your house still feels like a home and not a gym, but not so out of sight that it is out of mind as well. All home fitness kit should be hidden when you want it to be, and accessible when it is time to use it.

Finally, think about when you will be able to get started with your new kit. If you cannot find an opportunity to use it within the next seven days, the chances are that you will not be using it much beyond this first week.

As a new mom, you do not want to feel miserable so make sure you avoid starving diets! We all know that the best way to lose after pregnancy weight is to eat healthy and exercise, but of course if that does not work there is a diet that can help you.

Before I continue I have to admit that at first I did the starving diets before I learned what I am about to tell you. The problem with any starving diet is that you mess up your metabolism and since that is the engine our body runs on, we really should not play with it. Since I made the mistake, I hope I can save you from it too.

You see, what happens is when you go on a starving diet you lose weight quickly because your metabolism is used to burning more calories and you are putting in a lot less than that. So initial diet does the deed. But the problem is after you stop the diet you gain the weight back because now your metabolism thinks it needs to burn only the low amount of calories, and you are back to your regular eating so you are automatically gaining the extra pounds back.

Let me try to explain in numbers. If you are on average consuming 2000 calories a day and you cut your food intake to 1000 your metabolism is used to burning 2000 and you originally lose the weight, but as the time goes on, you lose less and less weight because your metabolism is burning less calories! Lets say 30 days into your diet, you lose all the weight you wanted and you go back to regular eating schedule. That is when the problem happens. Your metabolism is stuck in the mode of burning 1000 calories and you are putting 2000 back into your body. By the time it catches with you, you will gain all the weight back and maybe even few extra. So all your hard work for nothing!

To avoid this problem and to avoid messing with your metabolism you need to learn how to burn more calories while you continue to eat and not starve yourself.
