Origin:

Hoodia is a variety of succulent plant that grows in the deserts of South Africa. This plant has close to 20 species. Out of which the ‘Gordonii’ variety contains the natural appetite suppressant. This plant is also known as ‘Xhoba’. It also helps in maintaining a very high energy level. This plant produces flower with a unique odour attracting insects, which help in pollinating them. This plant is used by the San people of the South African continent as a traditional food variety that reduces hunger and thirst. They cut the stem of the plant to the size of a cucumber and slowly eat them for hours.

What is Hoodia Gordonii?

A plant variety that belongs to the Apocynaceae family. They are succulents in cacti form. They grow up to 1 meter with large flowers, bright colors and strong odour that of rotten meat. These plants are highly protected and found in the deserts running from Central Namibia to Angola. It is also called ‘Bushman’s Hat’ and ‘Queen of Namibia. A number of species of Hoodia are grown as garden plants while the Gordonii variety is tested for its appetite suppressant feature. Hoodia is one of the 400 medicinal plants facing the risk of extinction according to a latest survey. This specie is listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and will amount to illegally exporting if without a certificate under CITES from proper authorities.

This plant also seems to have certain medicinal properties. Certain tribes in Namibia boil Hoodia and use them as medicine for treating a number of ailments ranging from indigestion, tuberculosis, hemorrhoids, hypertension, diabetes and small infections. This plant mainly grows in the Namibia and South Africa, it is also seen widespread across Africa.

There are many contributing factors. First, it seems likely that we have a genetic disposition to store more fat as winter approaches. Many animals do this and it was probably vital to survival for our ancestors. Extra layers of fat on the body protect us against the cold and then can be used as fuel in the late winter and early spring when food stocks would historically be very low. We probably have a tendency to eat more in the fall, when food is plentiful after harvest time, to help this process along. We may also unconsciously choose foods that are higher in fat content at this time.

Hormone levels can also influence our weight gain. The interaction of hormones and other chemicals in the brain can bring about variations in appetite and cravings. Some neurotransmitters can also influence the way we eat. People who are overweight often have low levels of these neurotransmitters and the results can include excessive appetite, depression and sleep disorders. At the same time, the lack of daylight caused by the shortening days during late fall and winter can bring on seasonally affected disorder or winter depression. One of the quickest ways to give a boost to the energy levels and emotions is to eat high carbohydrate foods including sugar treats, chips and cereals that give us a fast blood sugar ‘fix’. So people who feel low in the winter will tend to overeat or eat the wrong foods, leading to weight gain, more depression and a vicious cycle that is hard to break.

One of the questions I get asked a lot is whether hypnosis and weight loss make for good bedfellows in the battle of the bulge. Hypnosis has been purported to work very successfully in a number of different habit breaking protocols, and has certainly been advertised as a good vehicle for dieters as well. But is it? Or just another disappointing strategy in a long list of failing approaches to burn the fat, fast? Read on as I share what I hope is a fresh perspective for you!

I have personally seen, (and used to some degree) hypnosis become a powerful ally in the hunt for a beautiful body, and have seen up close it’s efficiency in SOME areas good eating habit help. There is a lot of positive data that supports the process that hypnosis aids in helping people break bad habits, but mainstream science is still very iffy on whether this is real, or a placebo effect. My take is this: If you are open minded, and are willing to BELIEVE that the power of hypnotic suggestion is real, and is going to lend you a helping hand in your weight loss journey, you are much more likely to see it work. Simply stated, and this is far beyond the scope of this simple article, there is beginning to be a plethora of pretty convincing anecdotal evidence that supports the notion that our response to things like hypnosis resides MORE strongly in our internal belief structure, rather than simply the treatment itself. Said differently, if you believe that hypnosis works, and subsequently undergo hypnosis as a mechanism to help you lose weight, you are FAR more likely to lose weight than a skeptic would be.

There are whole bodies of work popping up around this “biology of belief” idea that your inner inclination is the most important component to the success rate you will see when trying alternative (and maybe even non - alternative) therapeutic treatments of any kind.

So, my advice to you is this: As part and parcel of a GOOD dietary regimen, and in a supporting role, if you believe that a good hypnotist can implant in your “inner ear” a suggestive motivator to follow through on your diet, by all means, do it! But if you think that simply spending a few hours under the watch-eye of even the very best mental magician is going to melt off the 20 pounds you’ve gained since having your last child, well - you are going to be bitterly disappointed..:-)

You do need to pick a good diet as well! But, with that said, if you are a believer, like I am, in the absolute power of the mind, go for it. And make sure to share your success like the rest of us do, often! It keeps everyone motivated, losing weight and feeling great..:-)
