When I was 34 I had a hysterectomy which put me immediately into what is called surgical menopause. I had a complete hysterectomy so no more ovaries either. Besides the mood changes and spontaneous hot flashes, the worst symptom for me was the weight gain. I felt like I had the hysterectomy and woke up 20 pounds heavier. I didn’t wake up 20 pounds heavier, but it didn’t take long to start gaining the weight. My obsession to lose menopause weight gain began.
It was probably a year after that when I went on a mission to lose the weight. I pretty much starved myself and I lost about 30 pounds. At least 10 more pounds than I should have lost.
Of course losing weight that way always means you will gain it right back, and usually plus some.
When you are in menopause your metabolism slows down drastically and you must speed it up if you want to have any chance to lose menopause weight gain. I sat behind a desk all day long writing and then at the end of the day I would cook dinner, oblivious to the food choices I should have been making for those meals. So no exercise and poor food choices, not to mention zero portion control, meant I wasn’t going to lose an ounce. Once again, I gained more weight.
I don’t know why, but I will always remember this moment. I was sitting in a recliner watching tv and I was sluggish and chubby. At that very moment I was asking myself if I wanted to give up and just live the rest of my life pleasingly plump or get fit. I was
40 years old. I had struggled with my menopausal weight gain issues for 6 long years.
Anyway, right then and there I decided to get fit forever. I called my Mom who had always
told me to just count calories and I’d lose the weight. I always ignored her. Well, I decided that’s what I would do. I called her a million times a day and she kept me on track. That first day I found out 1 lousy carrot had 25 calories. 25 calories!
Well to make a long story short, I finally evened out over the years by walking and hiking with friends and eating better and I do not count calories or carbs. I also believe I’ve tried every program and diet pill out there. Some are worthwhile, but many are not. Just remember my obsession to lose menopause weight gain turned into a balanced life through moderation and consistency.
If you are struggling with your weight and you need a little bit of help, one of my favorite diet plans shows you how you can lose 14 pounds in 14 days. It’s also a healthy plan that will show you how to lose the weight permanently, which is great since your metabolism slows down during menopause, and with age.
