About six months ago I finally won my twenty-year battle with tobacco. I had been smoking about a pack every day for almost that entire time, and when I quit smoking weight gain was a big concern for me. I was not exactly what you might call “in shape” at the time. My health had been steadily declining, and I was much more comfortable on a couch than a treadmill. You might even say I struck fear into the hearts of any junk food products that got within close range of my hands or mouth!

I was very worried about gaining even more weight when I quit, because past experience had shown that I would begin shoving mass quantities of food into my mouth to make up for the cigarettes that had once satisfied my oral fixation. I had tried and failed so many times before, but this time I was fed up with smoking. I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and this time I WAS GOING TO PREVAIL. So I began researching the best ways to quit smoking without gaining weight.

First and foremost, the number one tip I want to share with you from my success is to NOT fight the urge to eat a little more when you first quit smoking. Weight gain does not necessarily have to follow though! In my experience, it’s better to eat a little more for the first few weeks than to risk going back to your smoking habit. I actually managed to improve my health AND satisfy my munchies by switching over to veggie and fruit based snacks. Munching carrots and celery throughout the day was actually not as bad as I was expecting - the taste was fresh and crunchy and it fills you up pretty quick.

The other thing I had a lot of success with in keeping those extra pounds off was to take some natural supplements like acai berry and some other natural herbs to reduce my stress and nicotine withdrawal symptoms. These products were absolute lifesavers! I actually still take the acai berry supplement every day - it’s filled with antioxidants and helps boost the immune system and increase your metabolism. Find out more about the natural products that helped me avoid weight gain and quit smoking successfully after 20 years at my Squidoo page - “Quit Smoking Weight Gain” or check out the free 30 day trial at StopSmokingHealth.info.
